About Us

Chelwood Foodbank Plus is a registered charity (Charity No: 1155933).

Marc Godwin was the driving force behind the creation of Chelwood Foodbank and he was determined that we should serve the hungry and the homeless of Stockport. Chelwood Foodbank was established in 2012 and was quickly followed by a homeless project called ‘Loaves & Fishes’ and a ‘Pots & Pans’ project. Without Marc’s passion, enthusiasm and skills (not to mention his quirky sense of humour), none of this would have been possible. Marc’s untimely death on April 29th 2014 left a huge hole to be filled, but his friends and volunteers have continued to build on the foundations which Marc had left behind.  We miss him but we give thanks that we had the privilege of walking alongside him for part of his life’s journey.

It is said that thirteen million people live below the poverty line in the UK, with individuals going hungry every day for a range of reasons, from receiving an unexpected bill on a low income to benefit delays.

We have 4 foodbanks in some of the most deprived areas of Stockport & also work closely with some agencies in South Manchester.  We are not part of a large chain of food banks and therefore we can deliver our service in a truly holistic manner, helping those that need us most without the confines of red tape and adhering to unrealistic administrative policies.

The only downside to this is that we, or other independents, do not get a share out of the food that their huge food collections nationwide generate.  We are totally reliant on our communities’ support.

We are immensely lucky that a collection of churches supports our work and donate to us on a regular basis.  We have some lovely individuals that also donate food and we get a little help from local businesses & other organisations that give little and often financially.  Nobody likes having to pay for petrol for the van, paper for the printer or electricity but we still have to keep finding the funds to keep running and therefore every financial donation is pumped straight back into the food bank.

Our biggest asset is our team of wonderful volunteers – without these amazing souls we truly could not function.  We are a delightful motley crew and there is a place for everybody as we all have strengths & gifts to utilise within the Chelwood food bank family.

Whilst we might not be well known like the nationwide foodbanks – we have been around for 5 years now.  As the name denotes, we are more than just a food bank – we have additional services such as The Pots & Pans Project, whereby we pass on donated kitchen items to service users that very often don’t have any utensils to cook the food in that they have received.  We also run cooking courses, money management & IT workshops – funding permitting.
